International Press Institute (IPI)

IPI is the world’s oldest global press freedom organisation. It was established in 1950 at Columbia University in New York by 34 editors from 15 countries for the sake of a professional ideal: that the cause of journalism, in particular a free press, was of vital importance in improving understanding between nations, a prerequisite for the construction of peace in the aftermath of the second world war. IPI has monitored and advocated in support of press freedom and freedom of expression across the globe ever since. The organisation’s core mission – to find solutions to the challenges that journalists encounter in bringing the news to the public – rests on the following pillars:

  • The protection of freedom of opinion and expression,
  • The furtherance and safeguard of press freedom,
  • The promotion of the free flow of news and information,
  • The improvement the practices of journalism, and
  • The achievement of understanding among journalists and so among peoples.
