But what IS Hostwriter? Well, researching and reporting stories across national borders is difficult and expensive. There are travel costs, translations and hotel bills, on top of different news values and working practices. So the Hostwriter fund for international journalism is a sort of one-stop shop to solve these problems.

Hostwriter is a global network of journalists, writers and media workers who offer local help wherever they are. It's help such as a bed for the night, translation and transport, which can make all the difference when one is working in a foreign country. And from their Berlin HQ, Hostwriter also give out grants and prizes. This year’s call has just opened, with the deadline of 31 July, 2017

Migrants' myths

Last year's winner Ahm Abdul Hai of "Our Voice" used the prize money to finance an investigation into migration: "Our report about refugees from Bangladesh who regretted coming to Europe came out much better through our collaboration than any single-handed production could have," he says.

Runner-up Tarek Khello, a former ECPMF intern, was awarded with his tandem partner Christian Werner for their TV report about how myths on social media lure migrants to Germany.

Lonely hearts

And Marine Leduc and Francisco Pedro took the award fort he best pitch with their story about how people in Mauritius are being paid to chat online with lonely hearts in France. "While being more than ten thousand kilometres apart, and thanks to Hostwriter, we were able to reveal a practice that affects many people and feeds on solitude in a virtual world," comments Leduc.
